A Day at the Park in NOLA

Writer's picture: Becky ParkersonBecky Parkerson

Spending a day at the park wasn't the first thing that came to mind when we decided to visit the Big Easy. But, after a few trips, it's time to peel some layers of the onion away and see what else the city has to offer. That's how we ended up in not one, but two, amazing parks (with local, handmade Sweet Saint ice cream to fuel the journey, of course).

First up, Louis Armstrong Park, with a statue of Satchmo himself and tributes to other jazz greats like Charles "Buddy" Bolden.

Then on to City Park (we finally made it) where we wandered the paths for a few hours to take in works of art by masters like Rodin and Renoir along with a variety of talented artists who immigrated to and created in America. The natural setting added to the artistic experience. Check out the two lizards basking in the sun on the Rodin sign.

The Singing Oak, with its gentle music voiced by wind chimes in its branches, was a highlight of the afternoon. If you watch the video to the end, you might also catch a glimpse of one of the swan paddleboats that dot the water nearby.

So glad we took time to slow down and enjoy the peace that the parks in NOLA offer.
