A NOLA "Music Crawl" Down Frenchman St.

Writer's picture: Becky ParkersonBecky Parkerson

For us, a visit to NOLA has to include a "music crawl" down Frenchman Street. We have been regulars after a cab driver told us about this little section of music heaven years ago. We often spend a day Sunday here, but this time we split the "crawl" into two afternoons.

Bamboula's offered up a mix of jazz, blues and a rock cover band late into the evening. We discovered that they also make one of the best Whiskey Sours in the city.

We strolled a little further down Frenchman to the jazz temple known as Snug Harbor to see Judith Owen and Her Gentleman Callers. Her stellar vocals and throwback style plus the mix of global and local musicians made for quite a show.

We have wanted to see the Treme Brass Band every since we bought a piece of art that features them in Jackson Square. They were worth the wait, and we even got a selfie with their founder.

The band that followed Treme turned out to be a fantastic dance band. Two dancers, in particular, stole the show!

You would think all the great local music would make us hungry for NOLA food favorites. But sometimes you just need a good pepperoni pizza. It seemed fitting that we enjoyed on a quiet street in the French Quarter with a view of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
