One Night in Zagreb

Our two-week Croatian adventure began with flights through Atlanta and Frankfurt to reach Zagreb, the capital. When we landed, it was clear that September is the perfect time to visit! The temperature is still warm, but the crowds are thinner than the busy summer months.

We stayed near the old town at the Jagerhorn hotel, which had a lovely breakfast area with a fountain.

Even though we had one afternoon and evening to spend in the city, we had a lovely walk to visit St. Mark’s church and take in the view from near the Zagreb Funicular, or Uspinjača, which takes visitors up and down the hillside.

We ducked into the unique Museum of Broken Relationships, which houses both humorous and heartfelt exhibits contributed by those who have not been so lucky in love.

Then we headed to local tavern, Didov San, to taste some local specialties. We had to try several traditional appetizers like donuts with two homemade soft cheeses (in Croatian, Uštip I S Majmakom | Sirom Iz Kace) and a savory pastry with chard, garlic and olive oil (Soparnik S Kilselim Vrhnjem). The featured dish was the grandfather’s pan named after the family patriarch who started the restaurant (Didova Tava). Of course, we chose a local wine, served in a caraffe for the table.

We made an early night of it to be ready for our drive to Rovinj the next morning. It may have been brief, but our stay in Zagreb provided a wonderful introduction to Croatia!
