The dining and entertainment scene in Puerto Vallarta is full of variety and energy, fusing traditional fare with fresh seafood, waterfront dining and music everywhere you go.

On our first evening in town we stumbled upon a well-known seafood hangout called Blue Shrimp. The outdoor deck caught our eye as we strolled down the Malecón, and we were fortunate to get a table. We loved the table-side preparation of Caesar salad and the flaming Barco Camaronero (Shrimp Boat) with camarón mega (jumbo shrimp) prepared in the diabla, portugués and zarandeado styles. Our server, who was enjoying the disco tunes as much as we were, danced her way to the table and even got a few others to join in.

We asked the concierge at our hotel for a dinner recommendation in the Centro (old town) area. She immediately offered up Casa Tradicional as a “real” cocina Mexicana (Mexican kitchen) that even her mother approves. The housemade salsa, preprared at the table, ceviche and margaritas were hard to beat. The fajitas, served with tequila-fueled flames by a server who danced to the restaurant’s signature song made us feel like part of the family.

Outside of old town, we discovered that many of the trendsetting restaurants are near the water and positioned for sunset views. Mar Y Vino (seafood and wine) added a unique environment where we were able to put our bare feet in water as we dined and listened to an accomplished violinist. We stayed way past sunset to enjoy a dessert drink and fireworks over the bay.

La Papaya was right on the beach with excellent margaritas, beautiful sunset views, soft lantern light, and a singer-songwriter playing chill acoustic tunes.

We chose The Palm cabaret for later night entertainment, including tributes to Freddie Mercury and Lady Gaga. Roy Cruz, who portrayed Freddie Mercury, was stunning. It was difficult to tell it wasn’t really him. Both shows were full of sing-along moments and fun!

Shout out to our nephew, John, for recommending a few of these places. We can’t wait until next time for more dining and entertainment experiences.
