Towering over the landscape outside Split, Klis Fortress has a long and complex history.
We toured the military battlements, where Croatians defended against an Ottoman invasion in the 16th century.
We were also able to take our photos with dragons because, more recently, Klis Fortress was a stand-in for Meereen in Game of Thrones.
We even stumbled upon a lively wedding reception that provided a rousing soundtrack for our visit.
Then, we sampled the traditional spit roasted lamb at a family-run restaurant nearby.
When we woke the next morning, we decided that we were ready for some down time at the local beach club - how fun!
We cleaned up a bit for dinner, taking the opportunity for a mini photo shoot with the vibrant colors around us. Then, we headed to a recommended restaurant with fresh seafood, only steps from our hotel and very near the waterfront.
After dinner, we experienced one of the most memorable evenings of our trip. As we strolled back to our hotel, we happened upon locals gathering to sing (in cafes and even street corners) - the kinds of songs you might sing if you had been through quite a lot together, as a people. Those songs still ring in our ears from time to time all these months later.
