As you can imagine, who has the best tacos in PV is a matter of strong, often differing, opinions. Many travel guides will tell you to seek out Pancho’s in the old town. We may try it someday. For now the crown belongs to Pepe’s.
We especially enjoyed watching them shave marinated pork and pineapple for Tacos Al Pastor and discovering Victoria beer. Thank you to our friend, Paul, at Villa Premiere for recommending this place.
We signed up for the highly rated Puerto Vallarta Food Tour to continue our taco tasting. Our guide, Al, took our small group on a three and a half hour tour of the best taco offerings in the city. We began with another well-known Tacos Al Pastor stand, Tacos El Cuñado, where we were also treated to an impromptu break dance performance.
On the way to our next tasting, we sampled the refreshing local drink of choice: Ague de Cebada (barley water) in flavors that range from traditional barley to piña colada. Then Sonorita served us one of the most unique and tasty dishes on the tour: Cochinita Pibil, a slow-cooked classic from Yucatán. We journeyed on to Birrieria Robles where we tasted goat tacos (yes, you read that right), the primo tacos of the Jalisco state where PV is located.
We ended this fantastic tour with tacos mariscos (seafood) at Cisneros, a stellar margarita, wonderful sweets and the celebrated three-shot cocktail, La Bandera, with lime juice, tequila blanco and sangrita, that represent the colors of hte Mexican flag.
Cheers to all of the new friends we met as we tasted our way through Puerto Vallarta!
